2nd/3rd Grade - I Know I Can

This program is a replica of a highly successful project delivered in Ohio. The University of Alaska, the UA College Savings Plan and the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education worked together to bring the program to Alaska. It provides early outreach to students at the second- and third-grade level.

Alumni or community volunteers visit the classrooms with a book titled 鈥淚 Know I Can鈥, read it to the students, discuss their own college and work experiences, and give each student a copy of the book. The book tells the story of a group of animal characters trying to determine what they want to be when they grow up and how college fits into those plans.

The program began in 2007 at two schools each in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. In 2008 we expanded to three schools in those communities, as well as two schools in Bethel. Our goal is to add more schools and communities, and expand our outreach each year.
