UAA staff announcements

I am pleased to announce that Shawnalee Whitney will be stepping into the role of associate vice provost, Wednesday, July 1. Whitney has served as director of UAA鈥檚 Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) since 2014. She has been recognized with the Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Teaching Excellence (2014), a Legislative Citation for contributions to Alaska higher education (2017) and a certificate of recognition from the Diversity Action Council (2019). Throughout her tenure at UAA, she has focused on supporting faculty to become more effective and confident professionals in higher education.

Whitney will oversee the newly combined and critical learning and teaching support programs, CAFE, the Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL) and Academic Innovations & eLearning (AI&e) to better support faculty and students. In her new role, she will continue the colleague-to-colleague approach that is the heart of CAFE and will encourage open conversations around teaching, learning and career development.

I am also pleased to announce that Claudia Lampman, current vice provost for Student Success, will also be taking on the role of dean for the University Honors College. Although the UAA Honors College experienced budget reductions during the academic review process, Lampman鈥檚 leadership capabilities will continue to move the Honors program forward to help UAA students achieve their academic goals.

It鈥檚 a challenging time and I appreciate all of our faculty and staff. We have an amazing group of people here at UAA and I am excited to work with the deans and the faculty and am so proud of the work they do.

Please help me in congratulating both Shawnalee Whitney and Claudia Lampman in their new roles for the upcoming academic year.

Sincerely,
Denise Runge
